Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind al-Qaida attacks of September 11, 2001, was killed in an operation led by U.S. president said Sunday Barack Obama.
A small team of Americans carried out the attack and captured the remnants of bin Laden, the president said in a dramatic announcement from the White House night. A jubilant crowd gathered outside the presidential residence to spread the news of his death.
"Justice has been done," Bush said.
authorities had long believed that bin Laden's most wanted man in the world for nearly a decade, was hidden in a mountainous region along the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
His death comes just months before the tenth anniversary of the attacks of September 11 World Trade Center and Pentagon that killed more than 3,000 people.
The attacks sparked a series of events that led to U.S. wars in Afghanistan and then Iraq.
A U.S. official confirmed that Osama bin Laden was killed in a mansion near the Pakistani capital.
A Pakistani intelligence official also confirmed that al-Qaida leader killed in Pakistan.
Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the topic.
